Uncovering the Tree Spirits of St. Simons Island
The notion of being born on the same planet as the legends that preceded us is a concept that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. The enigmatic world of these legends has now become our hidden world, and we have stumbled upon their untold stories of numerous sailors who lost their lives at sea aboard the mighty sailing ships that were constructed from St. Simons oak. This occurred in St. Simons Island, Georgia. In the early 1980s, a sculptor by the name of Keith Jennings embarked on a mission to leave his mark on St. Simons Island. Armed with woodworking tools, Keith meticulously carved intricate faces into several centuries-old live oak trees along St. Simons Island. As he carved each live oak tree, Jennings shared a connection with them. Each of the live oak trees spoke to him as he was carving their facial expressions. Most of the faces displayed a sorrowful pain endurance that they suffered and their drooping branches and moss. He immortalized about 20 sailors, and it took him anywhere from two to four days to create his artwork. He also carved Indian faces, Hindu faces, and Buddhist faces, a mermaid, and a turtle. His son also joined him. There were more than just sailors at this ancient place in Georgia. This is why it remains a mystery because these tree spirits are associated with deities of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain mythology. This has now become a tourist attraction where visitors can follow the trail of the tree spirits and let their imagination take them back to another time. There are approximately 20 tree spirit carvings scattered around St. Simons Island, Georgia, with more being created from time to time. However, many of these are on private property. Nonetheless, searching for the tree spirits that the public can access remains one of the more popular things to do on St. Simons Island, and it is an incredible family-friendly activity all year long. The GPS coordinates and address lead to the tree carving outside Murphy's Tavern. However, the other tree spirits are scattered throughout the island, and finding one is like discovering a lost treasure.
