Richard Trenton Chase, also known as The Vampire of Sacramento, was an American serial killer who went on a murderous rampage in 1977 and 1978, killing six people. He suffered from paranoia, hypochondria, and paranoid schizophrenia, which resulted in his being admitted to a mental institution for a period of time. After being released, he killed a 51-year-old engineer in a drive-by shooting and then broke into a home where he shot and stabbed Teresa Wallin, who was three months pregnant, and later killed her son, her nephew, and her friend. She reached down under her bed, wanting to see if two of her cats were sleeping underneath, When she put her hand under the bed to feel around, her fingertips touched what seemed like human skin. This terrified the woman and she immediately called 911. As she was on the phone with the police, a man who was hidden under her bed crept out and ran out the backdoor of her house. This man was quickly captured by police at a canal in the neighborhood. He had a digital camera, and a gold ankle bracelet that belonged to the woman. This time she believed him and called the police while the boy put his ear to the door. He could her the man walking down the hallway towards the door.
