Exploring Six Sites from a Famous Savannah Story
Before the book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” few people went to Savannah, Georgia. After, everybody went. In 1993, the year before John Berendt published the book, about five million people visited Savannah. In 1995, that number increased by 50%, and by 2022 they received about 14.8 million visitors yearly. Much of it, like me, is still from the book or the subsequent movie. Even those that have never read “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” or watched the movie probably know about Savannah because of them.
Lincoln's Likeness Greets You Everywhere in Springfield, IL -- Even Outside of Subway
Young and old, the likeness of Abraham Lincoln is everywhere in Springfield, IL.Photo: DeanLand / Our Travel Cafe. Departing the Gateway Arch and St. Louis and heading for Chicago, we faced the drive across flat farmland with dread. Then we realized our oldest daughter had made this drive many times. So we called and inquired about potential stops along the way. Her empathetic and informed response: “Well, duh, you could stop in Springfield – home of Abraham Lincoln!”
Capulin Volcano National Monument | New Mexico
Day 23 we woke up in the Great Sand Dunes National Park (Colorado), did one last quick hike then drove into New Mexico to visit Capulin Volcano National Monument. This is such a neat National Monument where you can walk in and around an extinct volcano! Who can say they have been in a volcano? LOL it was fun and there were Mule Deer all in there! So cool! Venturing Into The Hall Of Horrors | Took Us Forever To Find | Joshua Tree National Park
Our last adventure at Joshua Tree NP was definitely one to remember! Have you heard of the Hall of Horrors? It’s a hidden slot canyon in a rocky area of Joshua Tree NP. We’re not sure where it got it’s name from but we assume it’s from the fact that the slot canyon is difficult to find, narrow, and has a large boulder at the top that looks ready to crash down at any moment! Half the fun in finding this place is, well, finding it! It’s completely unmarked! We try to give some clues as to where it’s at without completely giving it away. We want this great spot to remain a fun mystery to solve!
Relaxing Hot Springs for the Adventurer
Only 25 states have hot springs or thermal springs. Predominately in the west, you can still find some in the south and east. We have searched them out since we started traveling, which was when we realized that primitive or public hot springs existed. We were under the impression that they were private activities. I am glad we did enough research to realize that we were very wrong. It has become a great way to relax, meet interesting people and see some of the most beautiful places in the United States. These five hot springs are some of the best in the United States.

Four Favorite Stops on Our Epic Oregon Coast Road Trip
We took an epic one-day Oregon road trip along iconic Highway 101, starting in Dunes City and ending at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City. Google told us this was a four hour drive, but that was before the plethora of fun and scenic stops along the way, turning our drive into a 15-hour marathon.
