Florida to establish unique seagrass nursery to help starving manatees
2021 was the deadliest on record for Florida’s manatees, with over 1,000 dying due to starving. The animals consume about 100 pounds of seagrass a day, and this staple food is now scarce in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon with more than 89% of seagrass coverlost in a decade. In the Indian River Lagoon, declines were caused by nutrient runoff from local roads, septic tanks, and fertilizer use.

Florida Travel: Must Know Info to Swim with Protected Manatees in Crystal River | Ep 2
In this video we share some of the rules to follow when swimming with manatees in Citrus County Florida around Crystal River. Manatees are common creatures to spot in Florida, especially in the winter months. But due to the declining population, manatees were once considered an endangered species. In 2017, the population of manatees reached a minimum threshold and were reclassified from endangered to threatened in. Even though manatees are not considered an endangered species currently, they are a protected species, and one must follow rules when in the presence of these gentle giants. In order to ensure a safe experience for the manatees and visitors to the area, it is recommended to book with a tour company to swim with the manatees.
