Hawaii hotel prices surge by 58% as state aims to attract more tourists
Amid a challenging landscape for the tourism industry, Hawaii's hotel pricing strategy appears to be at odds with its ambition to attract more visitors. The rising hotel costs, particularly outside of Oahu, send mixed signals regarding the islands' businesses' eagerness to see a growth in tourist numbers.
Honolulu pushes ahead on removing Hawaii’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’
The picturesque Haiku Stairs of Hawaii, often dubbed the "Stairway to Heaven," might soon fade into history. Amid fervent opposition, Honolulu is resolute in its mission to dismantle the iconic 3,922-step metallic structure that gracefully winds up the Koolau Mountain Range in Oahu. This contentious decision is the culmination of over two decades of impassioned debate among local leadership.

Farmers' Markets and Independent Vendors Are Everywhere
It's been almost a month since I returned home on Garden Island. Since returning, I've noticed many things I took for granted while living in Honolulu. I used to see Farmers' Markets around Oahu but was not a frequent shopper because there were more choices. However, since I've been back on Kauai, I've noticed the many Farmers' Markets around the island.
How Do You Solve the Homeless Problem
I wasn't surprised when I saw a news article from Hawaii News Now about how Alaska solves its homeless problems. As a resident of any state, I don't think anyone wants to see another state's issues become a problem for the state. With the cost of living and shortage of affordable housing, some will inevitably be homeless. Now imagine the homeless issues are compounded by more people coming to the islands because other states send their homeless population to other states.
Anyone for Prime Rib at the Airport
I usually don’t pay attention or remember the name of the restaurant I go to at the airport, but on my way to Kauai, I ate at Lahaina Chicken Company. I knew what I wanted because the prime rib looked delicious. I found food at airport restaurants to be okay, but I had to admit, the prime rib was tasty. I noticed the prices were a little more costly than other restaurants not at the airport.
Another Chick fil A Opened Today
Today was the opening of Chick-fil-A in Makiki. Street lanes were coned this morning in anticipation of the early crowds to be the restaurant's first customers. I know there was drive through, and I also saw walk-up windows with what looked like an eating area. A drive-through and walk-up window with an eating area outside is a good idea. It feels more like a dine-out restaurant with a walk-up window.
Affordable Housing by the Numbers
With the Governor's announcement of the Emergency Housing Proclamation on Monday, I wanted to look at affordable housing by the numbers. All numbers are from the Honolulu Board of Realtors and the Government Census. I also used the mortgage calculator from Bankrate and the paycheck calculator from Smart Asset.
This Saimin Place Serves Good Saimin
Since I started writing and blogging, Palace Saimin has kept popping up in all the comments. I’ve passed their location many times before but never thought about it. Their website says they’ve been around since 1946. Many places on the island serve good saimin, so I wanted to see how Palace Saimin compares to the other places I’ve tried.
The Timing Couldn't Have Been More Perfect
I didn't realize the many government projects in progress until I discovered the city website. I applaud government leaders for maintaining the roads and structures throughout the city and state. With the recent opening of the first part of the rail, the long overdue rail is finally operational. Even though the skyline is taking people from Kapolei to the Aloha Stadium, it is finally operational.
I Will Take the Bowl to Go
I haven’t gone to Chun Wah Kam restaurant in a while and wanted to have their chow mein and roast pork bowl, so I went on a Saturday afternoon to the location close to the Ala Moana Shopping Center. When I arrived at about 1:30 pm, a few were in line, but the line was long when I left.
Where Can You Find Good Grilled Steak
I’ve been looking for eateries that serve delicious steak. Times supermarket serves delicious plate lunches with a variety on their menu. I’ve eaten their grilled steak plates, and their steaks were always tasty. However, I wanted to find another place around that price range that served grilled steak. I knew I didn’t want to go to dine-in restaurants because a grilled steak plate would cost between $20 - $30.
More Funding Approved for City Projects
The City and County of Honolulu plan to build a bridge across the Ala Wai Canal. And, as planned, according to Hawaii News Now, the Federal Government approved $25 million to build a bridge across the Ala Wai Canal. This project was years in the planning. You will notice their current projects if you visit the City and County of Honolulu website.
Visit This Drive Inn for Island Favorites
Many who drive through Dillingham Blvd know that rail construction has already started. Some of the restaurants and businesses are affected by the many detours along the way. On the 4th of July, I stopped at Waiakamilo Shopping Center to buy a plate lunch at Waiakamilo Drive Inn. I’ve been to several restaurants around the area but have never been to Waiakamilo Drive Inn.
Visit This Burger Joint in Town Today
I didn’t know much about Chubbies Burgers until I came across the restaurant by taking a side road off 12th Avenue and looking for another restaurant in the area. According to their website, their restaurant started as a food truck in 2016. They now have a restaurant in Kaimuki and looking to add another restaurant in Kaka’ako in 2023.
There Is a New Restaurant in Town
There is a new restaurant in town on Kapahulu Blvd. Honu Kalbi and Sushi is a welcomed addition to the many restaurants in the area. I went to check out the restaurant today for lunch and noticed I had arrived at the right time; no one was there. The restaurant was clean, and there was ample parking. They serve Korean BBQ and a variety of sushi items on the menu. I decided to have the Honu special, which consisted of Kalbi and Meat Jun with their in-house vegetables, fried mandu, and a macaroni salad.
