WHIPPANY, NJ – The inaugural phase of the Whippany-Passaic Rivers’ Flood Mitigation project is set to launch today, May 18, 2023. A low-flying helicopter will perform a comprehensive field investigation over approximately a 12-mile corridor, which includes sections of the Whippany and Passaic Rivers, as well as their tributaries.

Army officials have confirmed that a routine training exercise at Yakima Training Center in Washington was marred by an accident involving an Army helicopter on May 13. In an incident involving an AH-64 Apache, no soldiers were reported to have been killed. However, the aircrew was sent to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Officials have confirmed that one soldier was released the following morning, while another remains in the hospital. Due to the apparent severity of the injuries Quinebaug Valley Communications Center dispatchers initiated Dispatcher Initiated Auto Launch (DIAL) procedures and requested a Hartford Hospital Life Star medical helicopter to the scene.
