A hidden slave Cemetery in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
There are many hidden places in the Smokies. The Great Smoky Mountains are filled with history and relics of lives lived. One such place can be found atop a hill adjacent to the Mingus Mill parking lot. It is an area recognized as the Enloe Slave Graveyard. It is named after the Enloe family who owned the land around the Mingus Mill with the Mingus and Floyd families. It is also called the Mingus Mill Slave Cemetary. The Enloe, Mingus, and Floyd families were some of the first families to settle in the Oconaluftee River Valley in 1790’s. It was common practice at that time for wealthy families to own slaves, and some of their graves can be found near Mingus Mill. There are no names, birthdates, or death dates only a few unmarked headstones. There is no record of the lives they lived or who they were. Sometimes you will find coins on the graves, placed upside down. This is common of slave graveyards or cemeteries because West African peoples believed the underworld is the upside down of our world and connected by water. The coins are left in that position to pay the ferryman entrance into the afterworld, as well as, a message that you visited and paid respect.

The Old Elkmont Cemetery was the cemetery for the former Elkmont Community in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Elkmont area was first settled in the 1840s. However, the community was originally known as “Little River” because of its location in the upper Little River Valley. Finding an Abandoned Old Rock House & Cemetery in the Smoky Mountains
Abandoned in the Great Smoky Mountains are houses from times gone by, steam engines derailed, cemeteries of those who planted their roots here. There are so many great hidden gems within the Smoky Mountains. We did the Old Sugarland Trail recently to find a few of those things. Way back in the woods off the trail lies an old abandoned rock house that was once one man's escape into the wilderness. Much to our surprise, also off the trail is a cemetery high up on a hill with significant names from the region. Join us as we search out the ruins of the abandoned game cabin and discover other abandoned features along the way.
