The Environmental Protection Authority estimates transportation accounts for 27% of US total emissions. It is a tremendous single greenhouse gas emissions contributor. Gas prices reached unprecedented highs in June. But have fallen in July. The prices are still higher than they were last year. But drivers are experiencing the relief of lower prices.

For the time since 2008, motorists are seeing gas prices surge across the country. Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis for the OPIS, which tracks gas prices for AAA states the national average is expected to hit $5 a gallon within the next two weeks. He said, "I think we reach $5 somewhere between this weekend and Juneteenth/Father's Day weekend." Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Washington, D.C. are among the states already at $5 per gallon. Kloza goes on to say, "Anything goes from June 20 to Labor Day," and "We could certainly see the national average approach $6."

California has a short stretch of shared border with Mexico. The city of San Diego is less than 20 minutes from Tijuana, Mexico. Tijuana is one of the world's most visited cities. It has more than 40 million border crossings each year. Many residents of California get cheaper fuel by driving to the Mexican border. But such trips will not be beneficial to Americans much longer.

How high will gas prices go? Gas prices expected to top $5 per gallon this year? That's what experts are predicting. Will continued high prices have an impact to the economy?. According to this source, there's an interesting relationship between oil prices and the economy. As prices rise, economic activity falls. But as oil prices fall, there's less of an impact, interesting enough.

While the all-time national average of gas prices in the past 30 years was $3.62 per gallon, states like Washington are getting hit with higher fuel prices thanks in part to local gas taxes. In Washington state, the current average price is $4.73 while the national average is $4.326. This is due in part to Washington state gas tax which clocks in at $0.494.

Gas prices have exceeded $6 per gallon in many parts of the Bay Area

GasBuddy.com shows the average price of gasoline in New Jersey is now over $4.22 per gallon. GasBuddy.com advertises the cheapest local gas prices in Morristown at the Sunoco on East Hanover Ave, Morristown, NJ at $3.96 per gallon.
