SoCal Vegfest 2023
This morning, I went to an 11:30AM meetup at a vegan restaurant, Wheel of Life, located at Heritage Plaza in Irvine, California. I went an hour early to walk around the plaza to see what’s new in the shopping center. At 11:15AM, I entered the restaurant and browsed through the vegan menu until I decided on Vegan Chicken with cashews and veggies as well as brown rice. I also drank a glass of water. The food was tasty, as I ate and chatted with others.
Mexican Wine Festival This Weekend
Mexico is widely known for its culinary prowess. Not only does it have one of the most expansive food scenes in the world, but it is also known for its mezcals and tequilas. However, despite all the attention the food and beverage from Mexico receives one aspect of the nation’s offering goes not only under the radar but is nearly completely forgotten and overlooked. It's wine production. When thinking of wine of the Western Hemisphere, most will think of Napa Valley, Chile, and Argentina, but Mexico has its own unique and often historical wine offerings that deserve attention. That is exactly why one local hotel is putting on a special Mexican wine festival to help shed light on the mostly unknown beverage. Wine production in Mexico is nothing new. When the Spanish arrived in the Americas, they brought with them the art of wine production. In fact, Hernán Cortés began planting grapevines for future vineyards in what would become Mexico (then called New Spain) as far back as the 1520s. Even so, while wine-making has existed in Mexico for over 500 years, wine consumption in the country is incredibly low. According to Diario del Vino (Diary of Wine), the average Mexican citizen drinks just two glasses per year. This is mostly due to the heavy taxation placed on wine production within the country. However, in recent years, wine production has increased throughout several regions in the country, including Baja California (specifically around Cabo San Lucas) and in the Yucatan Peninsula near Cancún. More centralized and mountainous regions like Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey are also experiencing expansion in wine production. To celebrate all things Mexican Wine, the Found:RE Phoenix Hotel is putting on Mexico Unearthed, which will highlight not only the history of Mexican wine but also numerous vintages from wineries around the country. This makes it an excellent opportunity to not only sample wines from Mexico you likely haven’t had before but also will open you up to a rather unique and relatively unknown history of wine growing in Mexico. The event takes place this coming Saturday, September 9, and runs from 12 PM until 4 PM. General tickets are $25 and with it, you will receive 10 samples. For a $50 VIP ticket, you will receive not only the 10 samples, but a Signature wine glass as well as a bottle of wine to take with you. Located at 1100 North Central Avenue in Phoenix, you can purchase tickets to the event ahead of time through the hotel’s EventBrite profile.
