The Amaryllis Flower is a Hidden Gem!
My first introduction to this beautiful flower was during a typical visit to the nearest supermarket. They had a lovely display of these bright red waxy bulbs that promised to yield beautiful blooms. I quickly purchased one for my wife and mother. The significant sell feature was the following:
South Coast Botanic Garden
We visited the 87 acre South Coast Botanic Gardens that has approximately 150,000 landscaped plants and tress from about 140 different families. It's located in the Palos Verdes Hills in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County. The land was previously used as a diatomite mine, then a landfill and then in 1961 it was reclaimed to transform it into a beautiful garden. Whenever our family needs a little break from the hustle and bustle of urban life we like to check out places like the South Coast Botanic Gardens.

Heritage Rose Garden, San Jose
The San Jose Heritage Rose Garden is an unexpected jewel amid a revitalized downtown San Jose, California; a five-acre rose garden that contains 4,000 plants. How did this happen? In 1987 San Jose Mayor McEnery initiated turning land cleared for airport safety, a weed-infested eyesore, into a central park for San Jose. In 1988, Tom Liggett was approached by Lorrie Freeman, "The Mother of Guadalupe Gardens" and avid rosarian, to develop a competitive proposal for a rose garden in the area. His concept grew from an initial half-acre plot to a full city block. In 1992, Tom's proposal for a San Jose Heritage Rose Garden was selected and funded by the San Jose City Council. Local Councilmember David Pandori steered the garden safely through the political shoals. The Garden is in the shape of a large bowl, the center of which is 5 feet deep. This allows the observer to see every single plant from every place in the garden.

America's Best Rose Garden in San Jose, California - Pt.2
What a beautiful rose garden. This was the first time I went and it was impressive. Rolling green lawns and colorful showy blooms highlight the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, named "America's Best Rose Garden." Hardly a day passes when some species is not in full bloom, with more than 3,500 plantings and 189 varieties featured. Early May brings acres of fragrant, majestic roses at arguably their most beautiful stage. San Jose's 5 1/2–acre Municipal Rose Garden – a one-time prune orchard – is today one of the most attractive of its kind in the world, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
Avoid Lawn Mowing In May
Environmentalists are encouraging Americans to take a break from mowing lawns in May. The initiative has the name - No Mow May. During Spring, nature and your garden revive, become green, and need maintenance. This season means heading into garages or sheds for lawn mowers or weed whackers. Some see this as a chore. Others view it as a rite of passage as a homeowner. (source)
Hibiscus Blooms and the Sign of Warmer Weather!
I have no less than three large Hibiscus plants, and such is standard practice; they get moved indoors whenever the weather turns cold. Trust me, living in Michigan; there is never any shortage of cold weather. It’s been a long winter, and my Hibiscus plants are looking forward to being moved outdoors. It never fails; when there are signs of Spring, the Hibiscus plants start to adorn the stores nearby. This is the main reason I have three, and probably the number one reason I will add another Hibiscus plant this year.

It's Nearly Time For Holland Michigan's Tulip Festival
Let's Put Winter Behind Us and Welcome the Tulips of Spring!. As I woke up this morning to the cold weather and the promise of another snowy drive to work, I was reminded winter wasn’t entirely done with the state of Michigan. It was a rather unpleasant feeling, and I couldn’t help but think of how nice it would be to experience a nice amount of warmer weather right about now. As I wrote in an earlier article, I know that the promise of summer is not too far away when my Hibiscus flowers bloom.

In early April, the beautiful plants and greenery of the Oregon spring are starting to bloom, giving the landscape an otherworldly beauty. In this video, I hike a trail through some of this incredible nature by Medford, Oregon, and share its wonder. Field season's been crazy, but hopefully back into the swing of things very soon! I expect after mid-April, I'll have time in the day to more consistently film.
Growing roses and edibles
I love growing flowers as much as I love growing edibles. And flowers are gorgeous this time of the year, in early spring. On this video I picked some roses to put on the vase and harvested chives and oranges for our repurposed leftover taco brunch.
