City expects appeals after new property valuations. Philadelphia conducted its first valuations of property in three years and decided to raise rates on residential buildings. The new valuations raise property tax on residential premises by an average of 31% from the 2019 rate. Property owners can begin informally appealing the valuation by requesting a "First Level Review" by the Office of Property Assessment.

Philadelphia public schools began periodically screening students for weapons on Monday. Weapons screenings were already being utilized in Philadelphia high schools but on Monday middle schools were added to the protocol. The screenings will be conducted at six schools per day and will be handled by school safety personnel who will use hand wand metal detectors and search through students' bags.

Philadelphia schools will return to mask optional status after the Department of Health rolled back the indoor mask mandate on Friday. The mandate was dropped due to declining case count and hospitalizations. Now students and staff, except for those involved in Pre-K, have the option to not wear the mask although the health officials still recommend masking indoors.

Villanova's head basketball coach Jay Wright retired on Wednesday night after 21 seasons with the Wildcats. Wright led Villanova to two National Championships, four Final Four appearances and five Big East Tournament titles. While there is reportedly significant interest amongst NBA teams for Wright's services, the Hall of Fame coach says that he is hanging up the clipboard entirely. Fordham head coach and former Villanova assistant Kyle Neptune will take over the program.

Local public transportation reacts to end of federal mask mandate. On Monday a Florida judge sent shockwaves throughout the U.S.'s public transportation sector by invalidating the federal mask mandate on airlines. SEPTA, Amtrak and Uber all adopted similar strategies stating that masks will no longer be required but are still recommended. The Philadelphia International Airport still requires masks to be worn at terminals but whether a traveler has to wear a mask on the actual plane is up to the airline.
