Clay County sheriff says active shooter plan will ‘keep your kids safe’
Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook promised to keep students safe in announcing a ‘playbook’ to deal with an active shooter on a school campus. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office announced the “playbook” in collaboration with Clay County District Schools Superintendent David Broskie and Deputy Director Of Emergency Management Mike Ladd. The active shooter plans are specifically designed for each county school.
Clay County School board adopts policies allowing parents to challenge ‘inappropriate’ books
The Clay County District School board unanimously approved policies that give parents the power to challenge books they deem inappropriate and potentially have them removed from library shelves. They can also determine which books their children can check out from the library.

4 shoplifters arrested outside Dillard’s at Orange Park Mall
Four suspects were arrested after shoplifting 22 items from Dillard’s in Orange Park Mall on Wednesday. At approximately 1:05 p.m., deputies were called from Orange Park Mall, 1910 Wells Road, to respond to Dillard’s department store in reference to a shoplifting in progress.

An Orange Park woman was arrested Tuesday for one count of child neglect after a 5-year-old child under her guardianship was found wandering an apartment complex alone, wearing only underwear and socks.
Orange Park Town Council appoints new council member, vice mayor
The Town of Orange Park has a new council member and vice mayor. Doug Benefield was sworn-in to vacant Seat 1 on the town council at Tuesday night’s meeting. In addition, Councilman Alan Watt was sworn-in as vice mayor.
Clay County property appraiser gives estimates on expected property tax increases
Clay County homeowners could see an estimated 4 percent increase in property taxes for services provided by the county. According to the property appraiser, the taxable value for an “average single-family residential property with an existing homestead exemption” has gone up 4 percent for 2022 compared to 2021. Four percent is equivalent to an extra $51.61 on your tax bill. Included in this dollar amount are county services, fire control services, law enforcement services, and a tax on services for those who live in unincorporated areas.
Clay County commissioners leave millage rate unchanged
The millage rate set by the Clay County Board of County Commissioners remains unchanged, but residents in unincorporated areas will pay more. The commissioners voted on a maximum millage rate for fiscal year 2022-2023. The overall millage rate did not increase from the current rate, 8.601. However, the rate for two taxing units has changed. The rate for county services has decreased by 0.0122, but the rate for the unincorporated services (Municipal Service Taxing Units) has increased by the same amount to 0.1343.
New Dunkin’ is coming to Middleburg
A new Dunkin’, formerly Dunkin’ Donuts, is set to be built in Middleburg. The coffee and donut shop will be located at 2587 Blanding Blvd in Clay County. The Clay County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved future land use and rezoning changes for the location at the most recent meeting Tuesday night.
Middleburg man gets jail sentence for using minor to produce sexually explicit images
Harold Clare Potter III, 49, of Middleburg was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years and 6 months in federal prison, followed by 15 years of supervised release, for using a minor to produce sexually explicit images.

Sheriff Michelle Cook announced Friday the reopening of a Clay County Sheriff’s Office substation in Keystone Heights. The announcement comes after having deputies on bikes stationed in the area throughout the summer.
Clay County District Schools crafts Family Reunification Plan in case of active threat
Clay County District Schools is working collectively with the school police department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Fire and Rescue and Clay County Emergency Management to develop detailed plans of what to do if an active threat enters the school.

Man arrested for drug deals at Orange Park Mall, Home Depot parking lots, deputies say
A Jacksonville man is facing two separate charges for the selling and dealing of methamphetamine. Additionally, he is awaiting trial for an August 2020 vehicle burglary. Malik Warthen, 43, of West 18th St., Jacksonville, also known as “Ghost,” was arrested July 7 at approximately 2:26 p.m. after a narcotics transaction with a Clay County Sheriff’s Office confidential informant.

Alligator sighting at Ronnie Van Zant Park, public urged to stay away from pond
Clay County Government issued a notice Friday to avoid the pond at Ronnie Van Zant Park due to an alligator that was not scared off by park staff. The park, located at 2760 Sandridge Road, Lake Asbury, is still open to the public. At this time, Clay County Parks and Recreation is advising guests not to approach the pond, but there are no restrictions in place.
