"The glories of a mountain campfire are far greater than may be guessed." - John Muir*. Nothing is more relaxing than watching the cracking flames of a campfire at the end of a long day. Especially when the evening air is chilly and the stars are bright. Fortunately, there are several campgrounds to explore in the Connellsville area where families can enjoy an affordable getaway.

Are you headed out to go camping soon? There are many, many things that I love about camping, but I’ll be honest with you. There are some things that I don’t like as well. When we started regularly camping, our family needed to figure out how to get rid of bees while camping. You see, our oldest son is deathly allergic to bees. On his fifth birthday, he was stung by a bee, went into anaphylactic shock, and had to spend his entire birthday in the hospital. Of course, we didn’t know this at the time, but he has a life-threatening allergy to yellow jackets and hornets. Needless to say, finding the best way to keep these pests away was a very important goal for us.

We do a lot of research about the area we are traveling to. Specifically for free camping and where the best places to do it. Most of the time we like being off the beaten path, where no one is, but sometimes it is just easier and depending on the situation, more convenient to park in a designated area. In Oregon, one of the many SnoParks is a great option throughout the year. Rules vary depending on if you are within the November 1-April 30 (winter) or May 1-October 31 (summer). Just check the local national forest for that the SnoPark. Some of them may not allow it, but there are not that many.

We met up with some friends at Buck Creek State Park for a fun filled weekend. With rain in the forecast we got creative on what we could do.
