Is Fibromyalgia an Autoimmune Disorder?
Fibromyalgia (FM) has been characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, sleep dysfunction, along with cognitive issues and impairment, and mood disorders. Since it is an multifactoral syndrome with many different co-morbid conditions that go along with it, it is still a topic of research and debate.
New information on Autoimmune Disease
Currently, epigenetic modifications have become a topic of interest and research in the scientific and medical fields. Epigenetic modifications are the environmental, age, and genetic factors that impact and alter our epigenome. Our epigenome consists of the chemical changes that occur during different exposures that alter our DNA and histone proteins. These changes can lead to abnormal immune responses and inflammatory responses that can promote disease.
Lupus: Autoimmune Disease and Gut Microbiome
Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; SLE) symptoms come and go and vary widely. Flares and relapses are when symptoms appear and get worse. Common symptoms of SLE include fatigue, joint and muscle pain, skin problems, sensitivity to light, fever of unknown etiology, changes in weight, swollen glands, headaches, Raynaud's phenomenon, hair loss, inflammation of blood vessels under the skin (cutaneous vasculitis). Over time Lupus patients can also progress to have disease progression to affect organs such as heart, lungs, kidneys, skin, blood cells, and nervous system.
