Amazon Mandates Disclosure of AI Content by Some Authors
Amazon has taken a significant step in addressing concerns about the proliferation of computer-generated books on its platform. The company has introduced new regulations that require writers intending to sell books through its e-book program to disclose in advance if their work contains artificial intelligence (AI) material. The Authors Guild, among other groups, has applauded this move as a positive first step in ensuring transparency and accountability regarding AI-generated content. The Guild has been actively engaged in discussions with Amazon on this matter, advocating for disclosure of AI-generated work. The distinction made by Amazon is between AI-generated content, including text, images, or translations created by AI-based tools, and AI-assisted content, which does not require disclosure. However, Amazon's current policy does not involve publicly identifying books that contain AI-generated content. The company is open to revising this policy in the future. The Authors Guild, representing numerous published authors, had previously organized an open letter in which prominent authors such as James Patterson, Margaret Atwood, and Suzanne Collins called on AI companies to refrain from using copyrighted material without permission. While the new regulations are seen as a step in the right direction, there is hope that Amazon will eventually require public disclosure for AI-generated works, further addressing concerns about transparency in the digital publishing landscape.

AI and ChatGPT — friend or foe of a writer/author?
As an author/writer i have been very hesitant to utilize any form of Artificial Intelligence. I was asked to test out a specific AI but deleted that email very quickly. My reasoning for pushing back against AI was more due to being an author. I have seen AI utilized to write and then read out loud books. This may seem like a great feature for individuals with children and families, it felt like plagiarism to me. As i understand what AI is, it takes information it find from the internet and responds to the question asked of it. In order to write a book, it would seem that the AI would need to pull data from books that are already written to make the story. In a sense, it is similar to plagiarism. The AI is essentially taking other authors words, changing their position and putting them together to make a whole new sentence or phrase for a story. With that being said, the amount of books being self-published this way is on the rise. To me it takes away from the individuals who utilize their own creativity to think of, map out and then write a totally original story. As a writer and author, for me, AI would be a foe.

In the end, it's about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.” Stephen King.
