Alligators, manatees and sea turtles are among the Sunshine State’s most iconic species. However, Floridians have another less famous animal neighbor– snakes. North Florida is home to 45 of the state’s 46 native snake species, as well as one non-native breed, according to the University of Florida. While it may sound like a lot, most of the state’s slithery serpents aren’t so sinister. Only six are venomous, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says these snakes play a “vital role” in protecting the local environment, and they even help humans by getting rid of pests.

A young adult and two juveniles are charged for allegedly consuming the community's cherished mother swan and snatching her brood on Memorial Day in upstate New York.
