End of 2022 See Big Tournaments; GCHS Lady Bulldogs Dominate Again
The last week of 2022 saw local teams heading to Bossier (Airline), West Monroe, Caldwell Parish, and Lake Charles (Washington-Marion). The big story of the week was the dominance of the Gibsland-Coleman Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldogs defeated three 5A (Byrd, Airline, Benton) and 2A (Winnfield) to claim the title at the “Doc” Edwards Memorial Tournament. Samora Sampson took the MVP of the tournament. Sampson made the Top Performances for all four games this week. Baleigh Haulcy and Shamaria Durham were also named to the all-tournament team. Durham was strong in snatching rebounds while Haulcy had strong performances to help push GCHS through the tournament.
Calvary Cavaliers and Many Tigers Have Strong Showing on Class 2A All-State Team
The LSWA released the Class 2A all-state football team on the last day of 2022. Northwest Louisiana had 15 representatives from five schools over Districts 1-2A and 3-2A. Many’s Tackett Curtis received the Defensive Player of the Year honor. Curtis and his teammates won the Division III Nonselect state championship with a 13-0 record. The Tigers tied fellow Nonselect Division IV state champion Oak Grove and Select Division III state runner-up Dunham for the most players on the all-state team. Curtis was selected as a defensive back along with fellow Tiger Tylen Singleton. Swazy Carheel was selected as a defensive lineman. The Tiger offense was represented by Joseph Cryer on the offensive line.
Santa’s Gifts Come To The Basketball Court
The Christmas week did not lack in the gifting of some basketball for the shortened week. Some teams took advantage of the Christmas break and got some rest. Some added some extra holiday games. Santa dropped some presents to some along the way:
Many and Winnfield Dominates District 3-2A All-District List
The District 3-2A had a strong year as the Many Tigers grabbed its second state title in three years. The state championship run reflected on the all-district list as the Tigers added 13 to the first team list. m.
The Many Tigers Are The 2022 Division III Nonselect State Champions
The Many Tigers senior class know nothing but state championship runs as they left their school two state championships in the last three years. Many rushed for 404 yards against the Farmers. Tackett Curtis ended his high school career with a 98-yard rushing and two touchdowns. Jeremiah James rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Trent Williams finished the evening with 100 yards and a touchdown. Many defense held the potent Farmer running game to 34 yards in the second half.
Glenbrook Girls Win Region 1 Division V Cross Country Title and Other Region 1 Division V results
The Glenbrook Lady Apaches claimed the Region 1 Division V regional title last Thursday (November 3) at Lincoln Parish Park in Ruston. The Lady Apaches edged out Negreet Lady Indians by two points with 46 points. Glenbrook placed three runners in the top 10 from a freshman and two junior high runners. Freshman Mattison Fowler was the top Lady Apache finishing in 5th place with a time of 22:54.14. Eighth grader Laura Kilgore finished in 7th place in 23:31.25. Seventh-grader Emerson McLelland claimed a 9th place finish completing the race in 24:14.02. Hadley Haynes and Peyton Malone gave the Lady Apaches points with top 20 finishes in 16th place and 20th place, respectively. Sophe Downer and Hannah Day competed for the Lady Apaches.
UTRNWLA Week 6 Football Report / Week 7 Preview
The Bulldogs (2-4, 1-0) took a homecoming win over Jonesboro-Hodge (2-4, 0-1) on Friday night. Leonard Mosley broke the 200-yard mark with 203 yards and a touchdown. Montreveun Smith, Jyrel Jones, and Trenton Grigg each added rushing touchdowns. Ed’Tavous Drayton rambled down the field on 22 yards for 132 yards and a touchdown. Chance Leonard crossed the goal line once for the Tigers. O’marrion Jackson took a fumble recovery 75 yards for a touchdown. The defense also got on the board with a safety.
Cross Country Trails - October 8
A few races have come and gone in the past couple of weeks and a little catch-up article is necessary. The Winnfield Tigers sent two runners to Alexandria to compete at Fort Buhlow Recreation Area. Senior Kaden Victor had a top-50 finish in 42nd. Tyler Giordano also competed.
Volleyball World - Week 3 NWLA Recap
Week 3 thought we had Mansfield getting their first match of the season but was postponed to Monday. Will have to wait for Week 4 Volleyball World to see what happened. Red River had the best record of the week going 1-1 and now is 4-2 for the season.
Week 3 Under The Radar NWLA Football Report
The Cavaliers dropped to 1-2 for the season facing their second consecutive 5A opponents. But for the second straight week, the Cavaliers showed they could be competitive with the outnumbering squad. Byrd struck first in the second quarter when Jackson Dufrene caught a 41-yard touchdown from Lake Lambert. The Yellow Jackets had a 7-0 halftime lead. Calvary caught up in the third quarter when Bryce Carpenter took the option on a 3-yard run to tie the game at 7-7. With a little under nine minutes remaining Dixon Poirer scored on a 1-yard run to give Byrd the 14-7 win.
