Contributors shared stories throughout the month of June about how their neighborhoods were commemorating LGBTQ+ communities, whether that be by hosting local events, like parades. They also published stories highlighting local LGBTQ+-owned businesses and local leaders, community members, or organizations whose work elevates local LGBTQ+ residents.
Denver police offer a βSafe Spaceβ for LGBT people
(Denver, Colo.) The Denver Police Department plans to expand a program that has served the LGBT community since 2017. The police department hopes to breathe new life into its βSafe Spaceβ program. The Safe Space program is reminiscent of the Blue Star program for children in the 1970s. A rainbow decal will be placed in the windows of Denver businesses that will serve as safe places if a member of the LGBT community runs into harassment or other trouble. People seeking safety, including non-LGBT people, will be welcomed at those businesses until police arrive.
Denver shutting down only homeless shelter for transgender residents
(Denver, Colo.) Denver is shutting down another homeless hotel. The Rodeway Inn will cease operation as a non-congregant homeless shelter Aug. 23. Since summer 2020, the motel at 4765 Federal Blvd. has served women and transgender people.

Annise Parker, is a former mayor of Houston and an advocate of LGBT rights. Born in Houston in 1956, Parker grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family.
