The prehistoric Helicoprion, which means "Spiral Saw," had a very unusual feeding apparatus that a scientist described as follows: "A permanently-tensed party favor studded with a fearsomely pointed dentition." The scientist was none other than geologist Alexander Petrovich Karpinsky who coined the name Helicoprion after discovering a whorl specimen in the Ural Mountains back in 1899.

It's a good thing therefore that they existed during the Paleocene period which followed the extinction of the dinosaurs.

According to the Washington Post, in 2011 Chinese researchers came upon a large rock with a fish fossil on it. Even though the rock which was found in South Majiashan, China, was brought to a lab for further testing, it was only a year later that researchers decided to crack open the rock and thus make a stunning discovery of the remains of a mother ichthyosaur giving birth to three babies.

When one thinks of the Cretaceous period, it is not surprising that dinosaurs are the first word that comes to mind. Along with the enormous beasts that roamed the earth during that time period is the Sarcosuchus imperator, a super croc known to grow up to an impressive 41 feet in length and have 100 teeth with which to hunt down its prey.
