# Off grid
Homestead Update Vlog | Garden, Chickens & Bunny Update
Spring is here, and everything is green and growing. I checked on the potatoes and found they needed to be topped off with soil. My carrots are starting, and the onions are sprouting like crazy. The garlic has doubled in size in just a few weeks. The baby chicks have hatched and Bun Bun is happy that the grass is growing to munch on. I love this time of year, especially after a long, cold winter.
Living off-grid appeals to so many people

Opinion: Do the advantages of living off-grid outweigh the conveniences of urban living?
Many of us have a kind of longing for freedom from artificial ties. Life in the wilderness with no paid for running water or electricity. Also, no supermarkets, no drug stores, and no medical facilities. I wouldn’t survive, would you?

This Family Pays for Their Life on the Road by Picking up Odd Jobs Along The Way!
Many people have wondered how we can afford to travel full time. Are we independently wealthy? Did we come into a large inheritance? Do we rely on government assistance? Do we own a tree that grows money? The answer is “no” to all of those questions. We earn a living by good old fashion work. We pick up jobs along the way and that helps us fund everything we do. This video was filmed in Connecticut.
Off-Grid Solar Set Up | Our Solar Power System
Off-Grid Solar Set Up | Our Solar Power System This video is an original we did to show the system we have in our home. The setup was here when we moved in. This home was a foreclosure, and house was not running when we got here. So lots of the system had sat for several years until we came along. Never being off-grid before, this was all new and a lot of learning the ins and outs of the whole system. We have learned what we can and can't do with this setup. We have adapted very well, I believe, for the benefit of living off-the grid and out in the boonies more. If you have any questions about our solar setup, please leave them down in the comments and we will try to answer them.
Off-Grid - Below Zero - Wood Stove is Broken
Off-Grid - Below Zero - Soapstone Wood Stove is Broken As usual, with things on this modern off-grid homestead that you rely on, things break. Our Woodstock Soapstone Wood Stove broke, the cast iron bypass cover cracked right through. It will not properly seal the way it is, so we ordered a new one from the Woodstock Stove Company in New Hampshire. It's below zero, and this stove is our only heat in the home, so we were dreading doing this for fear of breaking bolts or not being able to remove parts. Luckily, we have an Ashley wood stove in the basement, but it's inefficient and eats wood like crazy. The stove company sent instructions, two bolts, and a small packet of never seize. They also have great instructions on their website to follow if needed. All in all, the repair went well, but while in there, we found that there were more parts worn out. As a result, the combuster and pan will need to be replaced in the future once we order the parts.
1800 Watts Of Freedom
Where the sun shines, It's beautifulWhiskey n Sunshine Off GridOff-Grid. The house had been "winterized" by the same property management folks that had removed all the other stuff from home several years earlier. Their quality was about the same. When Tom turned on the power to the deep well pump, I went around to the several shutoffs and faucets. Some were left open, and some closed. The sound of running water was everywhere. Unfortunately, one place it was coming from was the dining room floor. The pipes had frozen and burst in the dining room ceiling. We quickly turned off the pump and got the plumbing drained back down far enough to stop the leak. I made a few calls and managed to get a plumber to come over on a Sunday (it's nice to have friends), and he put in a couple of shutoffs that let us isolate the upstairs plumbing. We had running water (albeit cold) to everything on the ground floor when he left. Even this seemed like a big deal at the time. We now had water in all the downstairs faucets and a working bathroom on the ground floor. There was extensive damage to the drywall of the dining room. The floor was soaked, and I decided to give it a few days to dry out before I cut into the sheetrock, looking for the leak.
The Start Of Our Off-Grid Journey
Hello there. My wife and I live off-grid in the western mountains of Maine. We moved out of "town" over three years, it was. The house wasn't a full two-story colonial, with 2,000 sq feet of living space" a full basement. Three bedrooms, 2.5 baths. All this, and it was off-grid too. The house had been built in 2008 and had to be designed with off-grid living in mind. The place was overbuilt and insulated to the max. The previous owners had spared no expense on materials. Now the sad part, the previous owners had turned the place back over to the bank because they couldn't make a go of it. They suffered several setbacks that left them with more than one mortgage, a ruined battery bank, a destroyed generator, and no way forward.
