While Arizona is known for the copper boom, there are many other minerals - like silver and other metals - that played a key role in the mining industry and later led to the population boom in our state.

The Ghost Town of Pinal City
Silver had been found in the area and the boom was on . The post office was established on April 10, 1878, as Picket Post, But in June 27,1879 it was changed to Pinal City . The silver king mine produced large quantities of silver until November 28, 1891and the boom was over . Wyatt Earp common law wife Matty Blaylock died of an overdose and is buried nearby . In the 1900 copper was found and the boom was back on . Pinal was moved north and became Superior , Az .

Trail of Abandoned Buildings
One of Victor’s “Trails of Gold”, the Vindicator Valley Trail leads you two miles around the historic Independence mining camp outside of Victor. Construction of the mines began in the 1890s and came to a close in the 1950s when the Vindicator mine shut down. Several of Victor’s largest mines are located here. There are over a dozen mines on the hillside visible from the trail and from the road if you’re just driving by. It’s a very scenic hike along a gravel road.
