Girl Diagnosed With POTS Eats Salt Everyday to Help Her Survive
Hannah Mae Sutherland was diagnosed with lupus when she was 11 years old and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, widely known as POTS, when she was a teenager and has been battling with a variety of chronic illnesses all her life. Postural refers to the position of your body, orthostatic is related to standing upright, and tachycardia is a heart rate over 100 beats per minute. “What that means is for a normal person, when you go from sitting down to standing up or laying down to standing up, your body sends these signals to circulate your blood properly and to regulate and control your blood pressure and heart rate,” Hannah explains in a Tik Tok video. “Well, for people with POTS like me, when we stand up, our body does not send the right signals, so our blood pressure drops and our heart rate increases. And this causes feelings of dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea. And we can have presyncope or syncope episodes which is the feeling before you pass out or actually passing out. During these episodes, you can lose your hearing, your sight. It’s a lot. It’s bad.”
