Possible Book Ban in Ozark, AL Library
Article originally reported by The Alabama Reflector:. On Wednesday, a gathering was held in response to a call for the Ozark-Dale County public library to take out books that featured LGBTQ characters and topics. Over 100 people attended, and the discussion was filled with debates concerning parental rights and censorship. Although Dale County Commissioner Adam Enfinger did not speak out in the meeting, Ozark Mayor Mark Blankenship asserted that he had asked for the books to be withdrawn months prior and didn't think he had to do anything more. He commented, "I'm telling you, it is terrible when you read this stuff, and we do not need it in this library." The purpose of the assembly was to review the library's process for assessing books, as two complaints were made by Enfinger. Furthermore, public posts posted by the mayor on social media highlighting LGBTQ+ books in the young adult section were also discussed. The Alabama Reflector did not go through the books listed by Enfinger, which included The Mirror Season by Anna Marie-McLemore and Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzalez, both of which are published by MacMillan and suitable for ages 13–18. The effort to take out the books was met with intense opposition from other attendees. Alden Rocha, a conservative Christian adult library volunteer, said, "This government must represent all of the people of Ozark, not just the majority. People in the LGBTQ community are taxpayers too, and they should have access to the books that they and their kids request."
