What if you are capable of actually saving someone, of keeping them from doing harm to themselves, or changing their lives completely? It takes the right words at the right time, or just the right action to change everything.

How to Be an Effective Leader: Start With Being a Hero
The term hero conjures up a variety of images in one’s mind. From comic book drawings of strong individuals defeating evil counterparts to modern movies depicting teams of super human beings saving their cities, these Hollywood heros are different from the individuals I am referring to. My vision of a workplace hero aligns closely with the Greek definition of the word, “the protector.” As a leader in the workplace, one’s primary role is to protect their team. A workplace that feels safe and well guided will function more efficiently and productively, increasing employee satisfaction and company results. Lead by a manager who is actively concerned about the well being of those in their workforce, these employees will rise above their counterparts, fueled by the energy of their leaders. With this, there will be an overwhelming amount of trust established, allowing for personal and professional growth in the office.

How Not to Lead a Team Climbing a Volcano - Part 2
We all looked at each other in stunned silence. With a gaze, I looked up at the towering volcano ahead of me. It seemed more than one hundred times larger than I had imagined. At that moment, I wanted to turn around and get back on the bus as it was leaving the mountain. How were we supposed to climb to the peak without a leader? But by that time, the bus had already departed. Moto-san, Okubo-san, and I were left leaderless with a daunting adventure ahead.
How Not to Lead a Team Climbing a Volcano - Part 4
Well, it didn’t take me a half an hour to get there. It took two hours! By the time I got close to the hut, I was feeling beyond exhausted and ready to collapse. There had been no benches along the descent, and the ground had been wet and muddy from the rain. My only option was to stand still or keep walking. By the time I was approaching the hut, my legs were numb and shaking. Everyone I passed was speaking Japanese, and they didn’t understand English. I felt so lost without my team.
How to Not Lead a Team Climbing a Volcano - Part 5
Our green tea KitKats marked the end to an adventure-filled team building exercise and leadership lessons. Although we were tired, we enjoyed watching other hikers rejoin their friends and families. We understood what it felt like to reunite with one’s team. Like all of these groups, we had overcome many severe challenges, and we were delighted to have safely completed the journey. None of us could have predicted the obstacles, hardships, and danger we faced on the mountain.
The Critic in Our Heads
Originally published at the Huffington Post. I mentor professionals around the world and it is fascinating to me to observe how men and women approach situations, challenges, and new opportunities differently. Here are some of the comments that I have heard in mentoring sessions with the female mentees: “I do not think that I am qualified to apply for this job”, ” what if I do not sound intelligent”, “I am scared to fail”, “what would the team think of me”, ” I need to lose some weight”, and for the ones that live outside the US “my English is not good enough”. This couldn’t be further from reality; these women are intelligent, beautiful, giving, and great contributors to the business and their communities. But, for some reason they tend to terrify themselves with all possible and untrue reasons of why they are incapable, instead of just going after to the challenge as their male counterparts do.

Yakima Sunny and Hot this Week
Seize the Sun - A Seattle Mantra lives on in Yakima. You learn to seize sunshine in Seattle. As a teen in the late 1960s, if the clouds parted and the temperature peaked at 60 degrees, my newly licensed friend and I slipped bikinis over goosebump skin and cruised the lake.
