Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia at 4, 784ft / 1458m. Located in Hiawassee, Georgia inside the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, this highest point is truly breathtaking! Once you've parked in the parking lot it's just a short .60 of a mile hike to the very top (or you can take a shuttle that's open seasonally April-??) Once to the top you have very large viewing platform with 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains (These are the southern part of the Appalachian Mountains) If you come after hours or in the off season when the visitor center is closed, you still need to pay $5 to park. Or its $7 a person during season and that includes the shuttle. OR if you have the America the Beautiful pass, its free to enter.

Whether you are a beginner hiker or an established hiker who has gotten comfortable on the trail we all need to keep in mind a few things to help keep us safe on the trail and to enjoy our trips into nature as best we can. Here are a few tips we have learned that we think all hikers should be mindful of.

The Jacks River Trail is a 9.3-mile out-and-back backcountry trail that extends through the remote Cohutta Wilderness in North Georgia, following its namesake river through a green, waterfall-filled river valley. Nine miles downstream from the Dally Gap trailhead, the trail opens up to the gorgeous Jacks River Falls tumbling over a rugged, rocky outcropping. This trail follows along the crystal clear Jacks River offering many rivers and stream crossings. Great for a Spring or summertime adventure.

Known as Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon, Providence Canyon is located in Lumpkin, Georgia. About 45 minutes from Columbus and Fort Benning. It is also considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia.

Cooking over the campfire is a completely different experience. It is so gratifying to build a fire and get back to primitive cooking. We cooked some Cajun blackened redfish that we caught off of Dauphin Island. It was a delicious campfire meal that we got to enjoy by the river! One of the best places to hike in Middle Georgia, in our opinion, is Indian Springs State Park and Dauset Trails Nature Center. There are 30 miles of hiking trails in Dauset Trails. One of our favorite hikes is the trail from Indian Springs State Park to Dauset Trails. This trail is 3.5 miles one way and offers a great view of Chief McIntosh Lake. We love it because it has great places to explore on each end, plus it's a great moderate trail.
