Strawberry-picking in the backyard
Picking a few strawberries, I forgot the variety, from planter boxes on our backyard edible garden to add onto a simple homemade crepe for breakfast paired with Monarch Onyx coffee we got from Swork. That was our backyard breakfast a couple of weekends ago.
Pollinating Your Squash Plants
Although this is a job for the bees, sometimes they need a little help! There are a few reasons for this, one being that the bees cannot get to or see the flowers (it helps to prune your plant a little), and another being that you may not have enough bees around to help! It is very easy to help the process.
5 Tips to Grow a High Yield of Delicious Tomatoes
Did you know there are ways to enhance the flavor profile of your tomatoes and increase your harvest? Keep reading for some tips!. 1. Pinch non flowering stems - This is the process of finding the non producing stems, also known as suckers, and cutting them off. This allows the nutrients from the soil to be put into the flowering stems and produce a better yield. When tomato plants start to grow shoots will form between the stem and branches, these can be pinched or cut off. These parts of the plant are not essential and will allow for better growth!

A common misconception with apartment living is that you are not able to garden; this could not be further from the truth. The ability to grow fresh and scrumptious vegetables in your apartment is totally feasible! A balcony or outdoor space is prime; however, some plants will grow well inside near a window that gets sufficient sunlight.

Nectarine + Plum = Nectaplum
A cross between nectarine and plum, NECTAPLUM is the best of both worlds. It looks like nectarine with reddish and smooth skin and similarly juicy and sweet flavor with a hint of tanginess from the plum. Homegrown grapes are juicy and extremely delicious! Grapes are very easy to grow here in Los Angeles and they tend to be very prolific. We have two grapevines growing in our backyard. One is Perlette, the green variety, and the other one is Blueberry, with purple-blue color and a taste that has a hint of blueberry flavor.
These Are A Problem! | Do You Have Them In Your Yard? | Happenings On The Homestead
Well, the garden is growing, and of course, that brings the pests. I have one I am dealing with in the potato and tomato area. They are called Tortoise Beetles, and they like to eat leaves. Something much worse is on our homestead, and that is caterpillars. They are eating the leaves right off the trees, down to nothing. Luckily the chickens will eat them, but not fast enough, and they can't reach way up in the trees. Do you have these in your yard? Scary.

Creative gardening space
I am not a master gardener, but I love working in the garden. I sing out there, give the plants pep talks, and eat amazing vegetables all summer. I can feel any stress melt away out there. I love to experiment with new things, and this summer everything I tried worked. My husband enclosed the main garden after the third year of the deer eating all my corn the day before I was going to harvest it.
