Hundreds of dead seals were found in December in the Caspian sea, in what is expected to have been a "Mass Mortality event." Scientists haven't sealed the deal yet. The exact cause of death is still unknown, however, they have found the avian flu prevalent in the tissue samples. The origin is still in question and scientists are still not sure where or how the seals acquired the avian flu in the first place. Until recently, transmitting between mammals was an incredibly rare occurrence.

With our focus on COVID-19, we forget about diseases like the flu and RSV. During this 2022-23 season, flu-related pediatric deaths have reached the highest level since before the pandemic started.

I rarely write about the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), but the number of people infected by the virus, especially children, is leading to a fear of a tripledemic that includes RSV, the seasonal flu, and our constant nemesis, COVID-19. The death of many chickens, turkeys, and various other birds represents the worst United States animal health disaster that our nation has seen to date, topping the previous record of fifty million five hundred birds dying from the virus back in 2015.

Epidemiologists have long known that the colder the weather gets, the more people seem to get sick. In fact, many people believe that cold weather is the main reason for the increase in respiratory infections during the winter months. But does cold weather really cause sickness? HPAI case in Pennsylvania affects Warren County in NJ. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) have confirmed a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) case in a non-commercial backyard poultry flock in Northampton County in Pennsylvania, near its eastern border that will affect Warren County in New Jersey due to the control area radius.

The Pitkin chickens were euthanized, and the area quarantined to limit the flu’s spread. So far, about 24 million birds in the U.S. have died of the virus or killed to prevent its spread.

Councilmember calls for state of emergency in Kensington. Philadelphia Councilmember Allan Domb called for a state of emergency in Kensington due to the opioid crisis taking place in the neighborhood. The state of emergency would allow Kensington to gain relief resources from the state and federal governments. Domb said that the opioid problem was a massive public health and safety issue.

Birds have been hidden in north American zoos due to the rapid spread of the avian flu. About 23 million chickens and turkeys have already been killed to prevent the virus from spreading.
