The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended a new RSV vaccine to protect newborns by immunizing their moms late in pregnancy. The shot, named Abryvso and made by Pfizer, is given in the third trimester to protect newborns from lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV during their first six months of life. In addition to the Pfizer vaccine, there is also a monoclonal antibody from Sanofi and AstraZeneca called nirsevimab, which is for most infants under eight months old as they enter their first RSV season. The CDC advisers have stated that the protection offered by each option is considered redundant, so for most babies, the choice should be one or the other – not both.

Today, CDC recommended the first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine for pregnant people to protect their newborn from severe RSV illness. RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization for U.S. infants. This new vaccine, Pfizer’s bivalent RSVpreF vaccine (trade name Abrysvo TM), has been shown to reduce the risk of RSV hospitalization for babies by 57 percent in the first six months after birth.
