SAN DIEGO - "We work so hard, you want to cry. We are just exhausted. We are in shock," expressed Paul Gunn. Gunn, employed as a beekeeper at the San Diego Bee Sanctuary, diligently rescues and relocates bees across the county. The ordeal began last Wednesday, when Gunn uncovered deceased bees at one of his hives in Escondido.

With a break in our kidding season with our Nigerian Dwarf Goats it's only expected that the bee hives start to demand my attention. I'm not quite sure what its happening with this beehive but I'm thinking we've just missed a swarm, or we experienced our first Queens Mating Flight!?! Whatever happened, it's time to get in and do an inspection on our honeybee hives! It's going to leave me Confused and BEE Mused.

We cruised through neighborhood streets, onto highways, and finally up a picturesque driveway with a brook alongside it. The sky was full of clouds that looked like they belonged over Lake Erie, and the beehives were bustling with activity. We were finally meeting our bee hero: Chris Vario, owner of Sonny Rose Ranch, a forty-acre apiary south of Pittsburgh.

Backyard beehives are a growing trend across the nation, including Colorado Springs. Bees provide garden and community pollination, as well as tasty honey. Hives also offer an opportunity to learn about ecosystems, hive management, and, of course, honeybees.

We work hard to care for our bees but sometimes winters can be tough on a hive and they may not survive the harsh elements! That was the case for the Lilac Hive. Even though I’m disappointed and feel the sting of loss with this dead out we are going to learn from this experience and use it to better ourselves.
