The Florida Federated Republican Women Fleming Island (FFRWFI) is hosting an inaugural fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 11 at the Thrasher-Horne Center. One student will be awarded with a vocational scholarship.
The organization is part of a “powerful network of women across the country who participate and produce results in elections,” according to their webpage. “FFRWFI is a multigenerational and diverse organization that provides the structure, support and mentorship for Republican women wanting to participate in the political area to learn, engage and grow.
The fundraiser, “Battle of the Ballroom,” will begin at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 11 and the recipient for the scholarship has already been selected, Clay County school board member Beth Clark said.
“We are a new club raising funds for a vocational student. They are often forgotten,” she said. “The selection has been made and a well deserving individual, shall we say a ‘real survivor,’ I can’t wait to see how much we get up to in funds.”
Clark said tickets are sold out for the event, but they are still asking for and accepting donations as the student is “extremely deserving.”
Battle of the Ballroom will feature six local community members as “celebrity dancers” who will partner with professional dancers for a dance competition—similar to the concept of “Dancing with the Stars.”
“We have seven folks who offered to dance and raise funds, but some need more help than others in donations,” Clark said. “The one who raises the most funds wins one award and the people’s choice in best dancers wins another. Each of the seven have been matched up with a pro dancer for best results.”
Donors can choose a local celebrity they want to support and make financial donations on the FFRWFI webpage. Click here to make a donation. Local celebrities include Clay County school board member Erin Skipper and the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs Dr. Susan Legutko, among others.
The dress code for those attending the event is described as “dress cocktail / formal / black tie optional.”
