A Jacksonville man was arrested in Orange Park Friday for possession of fentanyl and drug equipment, deputies said.
At approximately 12:32 a.m. Monday, Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies performed a traffic stop on a silver Chevrolet SUV for not having a license plate attached. While initiating the stop, deputies placed a spotlight on the driver’s side mirror and saw the male driver with his head down in front of the steering wheel trying to conceal an item, they said.
The vehicle came to a stop in the parking lot of Cash Pawn America (330 Blanding Boulevard) and the driver was identified as Dalton Hooks, 27, of Jacksonville.
Hooks got out of the vehicle and was detained due to his license status being suspended, the arrest report said.
Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located a black magnet box behind the passenger seat containing four cut straws with white residue. The cut straws were consistent with being used to ingest illegal narcotics through the nose, the arrest report said.
When deputies returned to Hooks, they saw him moving his jaw from side to side and asked him to open his mouth. In his mouth was a small baggy containing a white powdery substance, consistent with cocaine or fentanyl, deputies said.
Hooks was told to spit the baggy out, to which he complied. The substance was field tested and yielded positive results for fentanyl, the arrest report said.
Hooks was arrested and transported to Clay County Jail and his bond is set at $15,510. He faces charges of driving with a suspended license, attempting to conceal physical evidence, possession of drug equipment and possession of fentanyl.
