Clay County Tourism is partnering with the Florida Roundnet and Spikeball Inc., and Airstream Ventures to host the first-ever “Spikeball Challenger” tournament in April.
The event will begin Saturday, April 1 with open tournament play in six divisions: intermediate, contender, premier, women’s, free agent and high school levels. The same schedule applies for Sunday, April 2, with the intermediate and advanced divisions competing for a title, Clay County Communications Director Laura Christmas said.
The tournament will be held at the Plantation Sports Complex (321 Old Hard Road) in Fleming Island. At the end of each day will be an awards ceremony and after-party for participants, she said.

Spikeball is a team sport played by two teams of two players with a small ball and trampoline-like net that players use to serve, pass and ultimately score against their opponents. According to the Spikeball webpage, it is often described as “if volleyball and foursquare had a baby.”
Competitors serve the ball down onto the Spikeball net so it ricochets up at the opponents. The returning team has up to three hits between them (think “bump, set, spike”) to return the ball back onto the net, the website said. The rally continues until a team cannot return the ball onto the net with their three touches.
“We look forward to welcoming Spikeball competitors from all over the state,” Clay County Commissioner and Tourism Development Council Chair Mike Cella said. “Hosting sporting events like this inspires our community to stay active and have fun outdoors while tournaments put our destination in front of new audiences that hopefully will return for another visit.”
