A Mississippi man was just doing his job as a DoorDash driver when a teenager tried to jump into the driver seat and drive off in his car. The delivery driver jumps onto the hood of his car and doesn't let go for a minute and a half while the teenager drives, eventually busting a tire.
It was not a good night for one DoorDash delivery driver that was simply picking up an order for a customer at 761 Goodman Road West in Horn Lake, Mississippi.
Mississippi Man Jumps Onto His Car & Teenager Tries to Drive Off
WREG News Channel 3 reported that 22-year-old Darien Cummings was picking up an order for a DoorDash customer at Zaxby's on Wednesday night, 24 May 2023 just after 9 p.m.
Darien had left his car running as he went inside to grab the order, which made his unlocked car an enticing target for a troubled teenager.
A customer ran into the store and said, "Somebody's car just got stolen."
That's when Darien ran outside to see a 14-year-old behind the wheel of his car and tried to take off.
He was not going to let someone drive away in his car, and he first tried to open the door, and then he jumped onto his 2014 Toyota Corolla while bystanders witnessing the incident flagged down authorities.
Darien said:
"Basically, I seen him stealing the car, and I ran to the stop light, and I pulled on the door handle and he locked the doors..." -Darien Cummings, DoorDash delivery driver
That's when Cummings jumped onto the hood and hung on.
"When I was on the windshield and we were going down the road, I basically just prayed." -Darien Cummings, DoorDash delivery driver
The teenager continued to drive the car and went over a median, and Darien fell off about a minute and a half later when he lost his grip. He sustained only minor injuries when he fell off.
The car was recovered after this "joyride" with a blown tire and damage to the bumper.
Darien is lucky to come out of this with only minor injuries, and "never thought something like this would happen to him."
He said:
"I stay out of everybody's way, I don't, you know, cause trouble or nothing like that, so yeah, I was real surprised." -Darien Cummings, DoorDash delivery driver
