In a horrific incident that shocked the nation, a 5-year-old Indian girl was abducted, raped, and strangled to death by a migrant worker who lived in the same building as the child's family. Her body was later discovered in a sack at a garbage disposal site.
The culprit, Asfaq Alam, along with the child and her family hail from the state of Bihar in Eastern India. They were residing in Kerala, a coastal state located in the southwest, for work.
Even though the police started their investigation immediately after the child was reported missing, it was too late for the little girl as this excerpt explains: "Child of a migrant couple from Bihar, the girl went missing from her house at the Garage junction near here on Friday evening. The girl's body was found dumped in a sack in a marshy area behind a local market. She was brutally assaulted, sexually abused and the accused used garbage and sacks to cover the body, police said."
The police received a tip that Alam had been seen with the child at a local market and focused their search there as a result of which they were able to locate the child's body. They apprehended Alam within hours but were unable to conduct an interrogation because he was in an inebriated state.
An eyewitness who is said to have spoken to Alam at the market claims the latter told him that the child was his daughter and that he was in the area to drink. The area behind the market is known to be a popular drinking spot frequented by anti-social elements.
Emotions ran high as the child was laid to rest and people voiced their outrage and fear for the safety of their loved ones following the horrific incident.
