In a tragic accident, a 49-year-old newlywed from South Bay, California drowned while snorkeling off Kahe Point, known as Electric Beach, in Oahu. It happened while Steven Phan and his wife, Brittany were celebrating their dream vacation.
Phan, who is believed to have been a manager at an Apple store located in San Jose was married to his wife for just 3 months. The couple had wed at a ceremony in Mexico. They were celebrating their honeymoon in Hawaii when Phan disappeared underwater.
Even though Phan was rescued and brought ashore by a spear diver, he did not make it despite efforts to administer CPR. According to reports, thieves took advantage of the commotion on the beach to steal the couple's money, clothing, and cell phones. They also made their getaway in the couple's rental car: "As If this could not be worse, all of Brittany and Steven's belongings were stolen, the thieves took their cell phones, wallets, money, clothing, they even stole their car rental."
A GoFundMe page that was set up following the tragedy has been able to raise $20,000. Both Phan's and Brittany's families were distraught by the news of the drowning as this excerpt explains: "We are all shocked, in disbelief, and heartbroken at the loss of such a great man as Steven. Steven always found a way to be a part of everyone's lives, no matter the distance. Steven was a true friend and an amazing husband, Steven will be incredibly missed by all."
Police are investigating the theft of the couple's personal belongings.
