In a frightening incident, a man tried to kidnap a barista by dragging her out of the drive-thru window of the Beankini Expresso in Auburn, Washington. The surveillance camera that captured the attempted kidnapping shows the man trying to lasso the woman by using a zip tie. Fortunately, the barista managed to free herself and call the police.
According to reports, it happened around 5 am on a Monday morning when the guy, whom the police identified as 38-year-old Matthew William Darnell, pulled up in a dark-colored truck and proceeded to carry out the abduction that appeared to have been planned well in advance: "Surveillance video captured Mr. Darnell attempting to put a zip tie over the barista's head as he tried to pull her through the window and into his pickup truck while she was handing him change, according to court documents reviewed by the paper."
Darnell then attempted to put a zip tie around the neck of the barista but she was able to escape his clutches and quickly slam the window on him. The police soon caught up with Darnell based on a unique "Chevrolet" tattoo on his arm that was picked up by the surveillance footage.
It was not clear why Darnell wanted to kidnap the young woman but the investigation made it clear that he had carefully picked his victim and time to put his nefarious plan into action as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rhyan C. Anderson explains: “He carefully chose a petite young woman who was working alone wearing very little clothing and with no means to protect herself. Further, the defendant was armed with a zip tie as a means of restraining his victim – a victim who was significantly smaller and 200 lbs less than the defendant…”
Darnell has been charged with second-degree attempted kidnapping.
