A 9-month-old baby drowned in the bath after the mother went to cook dinner after leaving the baby under the care of a 14-year-old. however, the teenager who was tasked with supervising the baby left the room to use the computer and got so distracted by it that they forgot all about the baby in the tub.

When the mother came back to check on the baby, it was too late.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred in southwest Houston, Texas on Thursday: "The tragedy unfolded at the home in southwest Houston, Texas, when the 14-year-old left the room to use the computer and reportedly became so distracted they forgot about the infant as the water continued running. It was only when the mother went to check on the baby that she found her child unresponsive in the overflowing tub and frantically called 911."

Unfortunately, the paramedics were unable to save the baby. The infant was pronounced dead at Texas Children's Hospital.

It is not clear whether the teenager is a sibling. Detectives are looking into the case and the tragedy appears to be more of an accident than anything sinister.

Unfortunately, this is one of several such drownings that are occurring with alarming regularity across the US as this excerpt explains: "Drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children aged 1-4 in the U.S., and it's the second-most common cause of unintentional death for children aged 5-14 after car accidents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

Per the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services, there were at least 76 fatal child drownings in 2022.
