When a 70-year-old man married his widowed 28-year-old daughter-in-law, the photos of the wedding went viral on social media resulting in a heated discussion with regard to the man's intentions behind marrying a woman who was 42 years younger than him.
Kailash Yadav, who lives in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, and works as a watchman at the local police station lost his wife 12 years ago. According to reports, he had 4 children with his wife and the third one married a woman named Pooja. Later on, the third son died and Pooja became a widow. A different marriage was arranged for her, however, it didn't last long because she wasn't happy with her new husband's family.
Later on, Kailash and Pooja decided to marry in a local temple as this excerpt explains: "Kailash Yadav, the watchman of Barhalganj police station, took seven rounds with his daughter-in-law Pooja and his family members were present along with the villagers on this occasion. Discussions are happening in the whole area regarding this marriage. Some people say that Pooja was lonely after the death of her husband. She was married to someone else, but she did not like that family, so she returned to her husband's house. Here she agreed to marry her father-in-law and this marriage took place regardless of the society."
Societal stigma against divorce and remarriage is still very much alive and well in India. Many chose to remain single and lonely rather than face the ire and judgment of their family and neighbors. For this reason, Kailash Yadav was called out and shamed on social media for his decision to marry his daughter-in-law.
