In a tragic incident that occurred in India, a young bride decked out in all her wedding finery collapsed right before her wedding. She had suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital she was rushed to by family members.
Per reports, the young woman, Surabhi, of Samaspur village, was set to wed Mangesh Kumar of Nawli village in Uttar Pradesh when the tragedy occurred: "The groom, with his family members, reached the bride’s house and the wedding rituals began on Thursday night. After the jaimala preparations were being made for wedding rituals when suddenly the bride complained of uneasiness and collapsed."
Jaimala marks the start of the wedding where the bride and groom officially meet each other prior to the commencement of the ceremony.
In a bizarre twist, the families of both Mangesh and the late Surabhi conferred and decided it was best if the marriage proceeded but this time with Surabhi's younger sister, Nisha. The wedding was swiftly held and it was only after the newlyweds departed to the groom's home that the funeral of Surabhi was conducted by her family members.
In India, where arranged marriages are common, the decision made by the families to have Mangesh marry his late bride-to-be's sister may seem shocking but it does not necessarily come as a surprise since in arranged marriages the spouses are chosen by parents.
According to reports, the marriage between Mangesh and Nisha was fixed in a room adjacent to that where Surabhi's body was been kept as her distraught brother explained: “We did not know what to do in the situation. Both the families sat together and someone suggested that my younger sister Nisha should be married to the groom. The families discussed the matter and both agreed. It was a bizarre situation as the wedding of my younger sister was being solemnized while the body of my dead sister was lying in another room.”
