Many pet owners are grieving a beloved pet or wondering how much longer their current pets will be with them before succumbing to old age and disease. For those who can afford it, there is an option to clone their pets.

ViaGen Pets is a company that clones cats, dogs, and livestock. Currently, the cost of cloning a dog is $50,000. They also provide the option for pet owners to preserve their pets' DNA which can be used for cloning purposes in case they choose to take that route down the road.

This is what Melanin Rodriguez of ViaGen Pets had to say about it in an interview with “People have a hard time wrapping their brain around it. This is real technology. It’s not science fiction. It’s not like what you see on TV or anything or in the movies.”

Rodriguez explains the first step in the process is a visit to the vet, where skin samples are taken from the pet in order to obtain their complete DNA. The clone, born via surrogate, will be a genetic twin of the pet.

There is more good news for those whose pets are suffering from cancer as they too can be cloned as well. This is what Rodriguez had to say about it: “It’s not that same pet born over again but it’s the same genetics. This piece of this pet they love so much is back in their life again.”

Despite the price tag, Rodriguez says more people are opting to clone their pets which has resulted in a waiting list.
