"Preventable Deaths"

South Carolina health officials are worried as the state is suffering from "preventable deaths".

The sad news of 7 kids on a ventilator is shared by South Carolina Children's Hospital Collaborative on their Facebook page.

SCCHC or South Carolina Children’s Hospital Collaborative is a nonprofit organization that represents the four children’s hospitals in South Carolina:

  • Prisma Health Children’s Hospital – Upstate
  • McLeod Children’s Hospital
  • MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital
  • Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Midlands

The organization reported 35 South Carolina children are in the hospital fighting COVID-19, and 7 of them are on a ventilator.
“One recurring theme that is so disturbing is that the majority of those cases of kids who are over age 12, who are in the hospital with severe illness, are unvaccinated.”

Speaking to journalists, Dr. Jane Kelly, South Carolina’s assistant epidemiologist, is worried about the rising cases. She continued with her statement, the alarming rate of the high incidence of young adults testing positive and becoming seriously ill, as shown by the data shared by SCCHC on their Facebook page.

She continues to push for vaccine as it has been proven to be very effective against the Delta variant, as well as any other variant circulating across South Carolina.
Still, she noted, there’s a mountain of misinformation spreading around that keeps some from trusting the shots.
“We have a pandemic of misinformation” she said.

S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control Reported Analyses

Following an initial analysis that revealed the overwhelming number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in the first two weeks of June 2021 were among residents who were not fully vaccinated, DHEC identified similar results when looking at provisional data for the time frame of Aug. 1-Aug. 31. Results of this analysis are below.

From Aug. 1-Aug. 31, DHEC reported 122,746 cases among South Carolinians.
Among the 27,201 reported cases where we were able to determine vaccine status, 23,166 (85.2%) of cases were considered not fully vaccinated.
Among the 1,522 reported cases who were hospitalized with COVID and where we were able to determine vaccine status, 1,080 (71.0%) were considered not fully vaccinated.
Among the 611 reported deaths from COVID where vaccine status was able to be determined, 458 (75.0%) were considered not fully vaccinated.

COVID-RELATED deaths in SC surpass 10,000

S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control on its website confirms that deaths have breached the 10,000-mark on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.

Authorities continue to advise the unvaccinated to have their shots, as data will show that the majority of the new cases come from the unvaccinated. Out of the 611 deaths reported in August, 75% were unvaccinated.

Among the 611 reported deaths from COVID where vaccine status was able to be determined, 458 (75.0%) were considered not fully vaccinated.

While in separate news, South Carolina’s Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson has joined 23 other state attorneys general to warn the Biden administration that if their newly-announced vaccine mandate plan takes effect, they will sue.
