Women Boxers Brawl: Proving Skill
Although women have been boxing since the 1700’s, fights featuring women boxers were effectively outlawed for most of boxing's history. The United States began allowing women to fight in the ring in 1975. Assisted by the notoriety of Lala Ali entering the sport in the early 2000’s, (she retired undefeated in 2007 and held the WBC, WIBA, IWBF and IBA female super middleweight titles, and the IWBF light heavyweight title), women boxers were finally allowed to competitively box in the Olympics in 2012. Today, women's boxing is a growing trend that is impacting equality, social change, and representation in the male-dominated sport.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and matches begin at 7 p.m. The event, sponsored by City of Champions Boxing and Tiffany Griffin, boxing promoter, is the second amateur event sponsored in 2023. Prince discussed information from a 2013 Comprehensive Review and Technical Assessment Report offered by the former governor, Mike Pence and completed by the Gary Police Department Technical Assessment Team (GPDTAT) which consisted of representatives from different agencies – the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, the Lake County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), and personnel from the Training Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. More than 40 officers and other police staff participated in the interviews. According to Prince, the report guided his decisions in reorganizing the Gary Police Department (GPD) as a preliminary effort to combat crime in the city.

Superintendent Dr. David Blakely, influential member of the faith community in Northwest Indiana and former pastor of the Faith Temple Church of God in Christ in East Chicago has died at the age of 86. Dr. Blakely died April 19 in Dallas surrounded by family. He was sixth of 16 children born to his parents, the late Bishop William O. and Annie Mae Blakely in East Chicago. The family moved to Gary in 1951.
