You Won't Believe What's Inside These Fossil Coral Geodes!

The title may have you wondering... a fossil coral geode?! Yes, you read correctly. I'll explain. In this video we're hunting for agatized coral geodes on a small river in Georgia. This area of Georgia used to be a shallow sea full of life around 20 million years ago. The river has eroded away layers of the earth to reveal these ancient ocean sediments. Ancient coral reefs are exposed periodically on this river, which is where we find the fossil coral. During fossilization, these corals were replaced with a mineral called chalcedony and have become "agatized". Sometimes they become hollow and form voids full of beautiful botryoidal (bubbly) agate and druzy quartz crystals. We found some beautiful geodes during this hunt and then cut them open to reveal the inner beauty. Enjoy!
