Why does Costco check the receipts at the door? Well, here's the answer I wanted to hear

I've always been surprised why Costco employees ask for the purchase receipt at the exit door. Well, I finally asked an associate. The main reason isn't to prevent shoplifting as I mistakenly thought, but to prevent customers from being overcharged for items by mistake.
