Caroline County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to be on the lookout for Bertram Smithen of Lorton who “should be considered very dangerous.” An active manhunt is underway in the Ladysmith area, the office announced last night.
One the evening of Nov. 25, Smithen is believed to have attacked a McDonald’s employee with a hammer before fighting several others, said CCSO. After the altercations with the employees, the 48-year-old allegedly tried to get into an occupied car in McDonald’s parking lot but ended up running into the woods behind the restaurant.
At around 10:15 p.m. Smithen is believed to have been spotted running across I-95, just north of the Ladysmith exit, said CCSO. K-9, helicopter and drone teams were engaged in the search last night.
It’s unclear what Smithen may be wearing at this point. He last seen in a blue t-shirt and gray sweatpants, CCSO reported. But his shoes were found at McDonalds and K-9 tracking led to the discovery of sweatpants in a wooded area, the Sheriff’s Office revealed in an update provided after midnight.
CCSO advises anyone who sees Smithen not to approach him. Instead call 911 immediately. Anyone else with helpful information is asked to call CCSO at (804) 633-5400.
