At about 11:30 p.m. on May 31, the general manager of the Aquia Harbour Property Owners Association announced two minors had been hit by a vehicle that evening and were being medically treated.
Both Aquia Harbour PD and Stafford County are currently investigating the incident, her message added.
At about 3 p.m. on June 1, Stafford County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the two minors who were hit the night before were 14 years old. Both were airlifted to a hospital as they were suffering from “serious injuries.”
However, both victims are expected to make a full recovery, SCSO also noted.
The teenagers, according to police, were hit by a 39-year-old Stafford woman who remained at the scene. She “had glassy, bloodshot eyes, the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath, and admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving.”
Aquia Harbor Police charged the driver, Beth Ellen Abbott, with DWI, 1st offense, a Class 1 misdemeanor. She was also charged with refusal to take a blood/breath test, which is a civil violation. She was later released on a $1,000 bond.
Abbott, who began her Marine career in 2003, was promoted to sergeant major in January. According to the USMC’s website, a sergeant major is the senior enlisted Marine of the entire Marine Corps, personally selected by the commandant.
Abbott is also a Purple Heart recipient and holds other notable awards from the military. Plus, the Michigan native was honored as a Kroger Hometown Hero at a Detroit Lions game in 2021.
However, the Marine Corp website, it seems, has begun to scrub information related to Abbott. Numerous links to articles or pictures involving her either reroute to other irrelevant pages or result in 404 error messages.
The crash investigation is still active and is being investigated by the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office’s Traffic Safety Unit.
