Drivers who use Ladysmith Rd. (Rt. 639) should be aware that a major traffic shift is coming after the holiday weekend.
There’s currently a project underway that includes expanding the two-lane road to four lanes.
On Wednesday, May 31, all westbound traffic on Ladysmith Road between Green Road and Center Drive will be shifted to the future eastbound lanes. And all eastbound traffic between Allen Street and Green Road will be shifted to the new road alignment.
VDOT said a new raised median will be constructed to separate eastbound and westbound travel lanes to improve mobility through the corridor.
This change is being made to build the future travel lanes.
Ladysmith Road will remain two travel lanes, one eastbound and one westbound, in the work zone until construction is complete in spring 2024.
Originally, the upcoming traffic shift was scheduled for May 17, but it was postponed with VDOT noting that the contractor would determine the new date.
In addition to expanding the roadway to four lanes, this $26.4 million project will add a 10-foot wide, paved shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists, a 5-foot-wide sidewalk at the Rt.1 intersection, crosswalks and new traffic signal equipment will be installed for pedestrian crossings.
