A Virginia state trooper was injured on I-66 in a crash that also sent the driver to the hospital.

According to VSP, on Monday, shortly before 4 p.m., the unnamed trooper stopped a red pickup for speeding. The pickup was traveling east on I-66, and the stop occurred at the 50 mile marker.

The trooper was walking back to his patrol vehicle, the SUV pictured above, when a Camero crashed into the back of the SUV. According to VSP, the impact from the Camaro’s crash pushed the SUV forward, and it hit the trooper.

That impact knocked the trooper into the right eastbound travel lane of I-66.

“The trooper was able to recover quickly enough and get out of the travel lane before being struck by oncoming traffic,” VSP said of the close call.

The crash was reportedly caused by a 24-year-old driver who ran off the right side of the road. The Camaro’s crash into the VSP vehicle pushed the VSP vehicle into the red pickup that was involved in the initial traffic stop.

The trooper and the Camaro driver were treated at Fairfax Inova Hospital. Both have been released. The Camaro driver was charged with reckless driving.

According to VSP, the trooper was parked on the shoulder and the emergency lights were flashing.
