Over 119,0000 Virginians who were “tricked” by Intuit, the company that owns TurboTax, will be receiving settlement checks in the mail, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares announced.
Checks will be mailed starting next week and will continue to be mailed throughout this month.
The money is coming from a $141 million settlement that Intuit reached with a coalition of state attorneys general that will be used for payments to about $4.4 million consumers across the nation. Virginia received upwards of $3.6 million in restitution from the settlement.
This compensation is for Intuit TurboTax customers who were tricked into paying for federal tax preparation services for tax years 2016 – 2018 but were actually eligible to file for free through the IRS Free File Program.
Consumers who are eligible for a settlement payment will receive a check without having to file a claim or make a request. The checks will be sent automatically.
The amount consumers receive will depend on the number of tax years that they were affected. Most consumers are expected to receive between $29 and $30.
Consumers who believe they may be affected should be on the lookout for an email from Rust Consulting, the settlement fund administrator, which has been tasked with the duty of notifying impacted people.
Regardless of the email, there is nothing an eligible consumer needs to do to receive a check.
“TurboTax misled Virginians, and now they are officially paying the price. Over $3.6 million dollars has been secured for the 119,899 Virginians that were tricked into paying unnecessary fees. I’m proud that my office was able to put that money back into the affected consumers’ pockets, where it belonged all along,” said Attorney General Miyares.
