Drivers take be advised: as of today, the two-lane bridge on Rt. 628 (Dorrell Road / Spring Cottage Road) is closed for emergency repairs.
On Monday, crews began conducting a routine maintenance on the bridge, which was scheduled to run through 7 p.m. Friday.
However, today, they found “significant deterioration in key bridge elements,” according to VDOT.
Further details about the problems weren’t disclosed, but VDOT added that the closure is necessary for motorists’ safety.
The 60-year-old bridge crosses the Mattaponi River at the King and Queen and King William county line. And VDOT hasn’t announced the reopening date but said the department will provide an estimated timeline once the repair schedule is finalized.
Meanwhile, the closure of the bridge, which averages 295 vehicles a day, will result in a notable amount of additional travel time for drivers who rely on that crossing as the recommended detour is about 22 miles long.
That route includes:
· Route 600 (West River Road)
· Route 360
· Route 721 (Newtown Road)
· Route 639 (Eastern View Road)
VDOT has erected barricades in relevant locations. There are also signs in the area to direct drivers along the detour.
